Beauty Buzz: New Drug the Key to Longer Lashes?

Just today, an FDA panel approved the glaucoma drug, Lumigan, as a "safe and effective" way to longer and fuller eyelashes. The FDA itself is expected to make a decision on the drug in mid-2009, and normally follows the panel's advice. There is still no cure for AIDS, MS or even herpes, but longer eyelashes, check!

Allergan, the maker of the drug, also makes Botox, so they are obviously aware (and drooling in anticipation) of how much money women will put towards cosmetic enhancements. If approved, Allergan plans to market the drug under the brand name, Latisse.

A study showed that once-daily application significantly increased prominence of lashes after four months. It also increased eyelash length, thickness and darkness. Two questions: Application? I thought we were talking pills here. I like pills. And four months? I have a hard time waiting the 3 minutes required for microwave popcorn so that's asking a lot.

Not suprisingly, only one African-American patient was included in company trials. Um, hello! Black girls like luscious eyelashes too!

I don't know...what's your verdict? Would you try it?
