Golden Globe Awards: The Good, The Bad and The Fug

Neutrals reigned supreme but the other color story of the evening was definitely deep blues and dark purples. Blake Lively walked the carpet in an oceanic super slim strapless silk gown by Nina Ricci. I'm not into the surfer girl hair but I suppose it works for her.

I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal looked amazing in a bold choice: a belted black and blue leopard print frock by Lanvin. A suprisingly sexy look for Miss Maggie.

Anne Hathaway, who very clearly stays out of the sun, sparkled in a navy sequin and chiffon Armani Prive gown.

Debra Messing, who I usually love, was somewhat of a disappointment this year in indigo Zac Posen. The fit, the fabric, the wierd halter top...it's just not working for me.

A blond Anna Paquin, on the other hand, gets snaps and claps for this simple and chic plum colored Herve Leroux gown that fit her to a tee.

Hayden Panettiere also wore deep purple, choosing a Gianfranco Ferre gown with a beaded bodice. Great hair.

Rumer Willis enjoyed her Miss Golden Globe status in beautiful berry-colored Reem Acra gown that was interestingly accessorized with a jeweled black belt. Not a fan of the red hair but otherwise, nice job.

Yay! Big winner, Kate Winslet looked timeless in black Yves Saint Laurent. Leo DiCaprio is excellent arm candy.

Another lady in black, Amy Adams, showed up in a tulle Oscar de la Renta dress with a sweetheart neckline and some absolutely fabulous green jewelry.

Evan Rachel Wood also chose a black dress but with a plunging neckline and a cacophony of shimmering tiers.

Ummm...Heidi? What happened here? Not a fan.

OMG. Renee Zellweger showed up in a Caroline Herrera gown that could only be called unfortunate. A really weird silhouette and an unexplainable sheer bodice. It's a no.

Jennifer Lopez served it up for all the haters in a gleamingly gold Marchesa gown that's reminiscent of another more infamous plunge-necked gown she wore some years back. She better work.

Glenn Close is giving me Dorothy Zbornak. This is not good.

Wow! This bright red mermaid cut dress was quite a departure from the nudes and deep, dark shades that ruled most of the red carpet. Eva Longoria dazzled in a Reem Acra original that stood out from the crowd.

Kyra Sedgwick also chose red, but in a deeper shade and in the form of a belted Oscar de la Renta column. I like.

Oy, this here is a mess. First of all, Cameron Diaz's face and hair were beat. The chopped and screwed Pepto pink frock (by Chanel) is not helping. Wrong for many, many reasons.

Christina Applegate should have thought twice about this strapless Roberto Cavalli. I don't quite understand the poof right below the hip and the color, I must say, is very last year. There's a retro vibe but in a bad way. Great necklace though!

Drew, Drew, Drew. Where do we begin? The hair of course. Why must it be so large? And your Dior dress wasn't working for me either. Better luck next time.

America Ferrera should have been sweet as pie in her cocktail-length frock but unfortunately it looked way too overworked and pointy and the color washed her out. It could have been worse, but it also could have been a lot better.

Always ask a friend if a print you are considering reminds them of drapes/hallucinogenic drugs/vomit/all of the above. It will steer you right every time. Trust this.

Golden Globe Awards: Nude is the New Black

Did a pre-show memo go out? Or has the cost of deeply-colored fabric gone up like everything else? I have to ask because no less than thirteen actresses showed up to the Golden Globes red carpet in long, pale gowns in nudes and neutrals. It's really quite a color story! In recent years past, pops of statement-making color ruled the Best Dressed lists, but this year, the lack of bright color was the statement. Startling, but a welcome change. Best of all, these ladies and their gowns tended to look amazing. Let's start with my favorite, Kate Beckinsale (above), whose strapless, tulip-shaped Versace dress fit her like a glove. Her red jeweled chandelier earrings added a splash of fun. Brava.

Sandra Bullock looked elegant in a one-shouldered Dior gown that was draped and ruffled to the max. Gorge.

Eva Mendes can do no wrong in my eyes and stayed true to form in ivory Dior. Fuego! The folded flourish at her hip could have been OTT in the worst way, but I've decided I love it. The turquoise statement necklace is the perfect accompaniment.

Salma Hayek floated along in a figure-flattering silouhette by Dior with thick straps that accentuated her fabulous decolletage.

Salma's BFF Penelope Cruz was a tad boring but looked beautiful as usual in an Armani Prive dress with horizontal detailing.

Demi Moore looked MILF-tastic in a pale Dior confection with a great criss cross neckline and more horizontal details.

Elizabeth Banks (crickets) chose a ruffle-laden J. Mendel gown in the palest of pinks. Although statement necklaces were certainly a big theme of the night, hers I would have left off.

Amanda Seyfried of Big Love and Mamma Mia knows that you can't go wrong with a one-shouldered Grecian column dress. Nice work.

Miss Yonce worked a taupe and silver Ellie Saab gown with a slit up to there and amazing details that accentuated her curves. Statement necklace, check.

Vanessa Hudgens wore a bodice-hugging, blush colored gown that shined. Although the dress does seem a bit mature for her, the long necklaces work to her advantage.

Miley Cyrus (who incidentally makes me violently ill) was spotted in off-white Marchesa with a gold-patterned inset.

Angie-baby looked simple and elegant (as per usual) in pale silver Versace with a thigh-high slit. Oh yeah, and Brad was there too.

Isla Fisher, who often wears emerald at big events, this time went with the crowd in an asymmetrical Carlos Miele frock that boasted three shades of nude.

Who was your favorite?
