Did a pre-show memo go out? Or has the cost of deeply-colored fabric gone up like everything else? I have to ask because no less than thirteen actresses showed up to the Golden Globes red carpet in long, pale gowns in nudes and neutrals. It's really quite a color story! In recent years past, pops of statement-making color ruled the Best Dressed lists, but this year, the lack of bright color was the statement. Startling, but a welcome change. Best of all, these ladies and their gowns tended to look amazing. Let's start with my favorite, Kate Beckinsale (above), whose strapless, tulip-shaped Versace dress fit her like a glove. Her red jeweled chandelier earrings added a splash of fun. Brava.
Sandra Bullock looked elegant in a one-shouldered Dior gown that was draped and ruffled to the max. Gorge.
Eva Mendes can do no wrong in my eyes and stayed true to form in ivory Dior. Fuego! The folded flourish at her hip could have been OTT in the worst way, but I've decided I love it. The turquoise statement necklace is the perfect accompaniment.
Salma Hayek floated along in a figure-flattering silouhette by Dior with thick straps that accentuated her fabulous decolletage.
Salma's BFF Penelope Cruz was a tad boring but looked beautiful as usual in an Armani Prive dress with horizontal detailing.
Demi Moore looked MILF-tastic in a pale Dior confection with a great criss cross neckline and more horizontal details.
Elizabeth Banks (crickets) chose a ruffle-laden J. Mendel gown in the palest of pinks. Although statement necklaces were certainly a big theme of the night, hers I would have left off.
Amanda Seyfried of Big Love and Mamma Mia knows that you can't go wrong with a one-shouldered Grecian column dress. Nice work.
Miss Yonce worked a taupe and silver Ellie Saab gown with a slit up to there and amazing details that accentuated her curves. Statement necklace, check.
Vanessa Hudgens wore a bodice-hugging, blush colored gown that shined. Although the dress does seem a bit mature for her, the long necklaces work to her advantage.
Miley Cyrus (who incidentally makes me violently ill) was spotted in off-white Marchesa with a gold-patterned inset.
Angie-baby looked simple and elegant (as per usual) in pale silver Versace with a thigh-high slit. Oh yeah, and Brad was there too.
Isla Fisher, who often wears emerald at big events, this time went with the crowd in an asymmetrical Carlos Miele frock that boasted three shades of nude.
