Fashion Recap: Fashion Rocks 2008!

Strike a pose, there's nothing to it
asdf
Soooo, did Fashion Rocks rock your world? Personally, I was waiting for a performance on par with Mary J. and Usher, who KILLED it last year, but alas, it wasn't to be. I was entertained for the most part (Thank God for the fast forward button) and it was such fun gawking at all the fashion hits and misses...let's rezshujsh shall we?

Lil Miss Good Girl Turned Bad opened the show, and although she looked as gorgeous as usual, the performance was kind of a snore. I mean, I've done better vogues drunk in a gay club on a Saturday night.

Luckily, her origami inspired red carpet look didn't disappoint. I have questions about her hair but let's move on to greener pastures...

CHARLIZE! With every beat of my heart and bat of my falsies, I live and breathe for Ms. Theron. She is always sooo devastatingly chic and glamorous. Shall we count the ways? 1) Chunky statement necklace, 2) Opened-toed booties, 3) Skin-tight leggings, 4) Shiny all over. Check, check, check, and check.

Can we tawk about Beyonce as Etta? Did you love it or hate it? I have a feeling there are strong opinions on either side. I personally thought she looked absolutely fabulous in her perfectly vintage dress and amaaaazing emerald earrings.

Her 70's fish-scaled one-piece on the other hand? Ummm...I really loved the top of it, especially the plunging V and puffed-up shoulders. The bell bottoms were a bit much for me, definitely something only Beyonce could pull that off. In positive news, wasn't it refreshing how natural and toned down her makeup and hair were?

I've decided that Fergie looks like a Muppet. That's all.

LL came out looing all kinds of dapper in his smoking jacket. To complete the look, that mike should really be a cigar, or a Dutch, you know whatever your pleasure. Yep, he'd still get wiped down.

First question: Who da hell is Duffy? Second question: Why does she look 45? Is she 45?

Mary J. looked FAN-tastic during performance! She is good for some leggings and some thigh- highs, isn't she? The cream looked great on her, her hair is the right color, she just betta work.
Her red carpet look? Meh.

You know how Posh Becks is all about "That Extra Half an Inch?" Well for Mimi-la, it's all about that extra half a dress! It worked wonders! She actually looks like a grown up lady for once in life. Shout out to whoever snatched the scissors from her hand when she tried to turn this dress into booty shorts.

Now Tyra, you know I love you, but has Halloween come early for you? Please tone down the scary face, and hair for that matter. The dress is cool but if it was in black, she would totally be giving me Elvira.

PCD. I love them. And yes, I am ashamed. My therapist knows and we are working through it.

Solange the Hedgehog continued her reign of terror as "Celebrity Sister Most Likely to Inspire a 'Why Lord?'" on the red carpet.

However, in happier news, I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. Like she actually worked it. I was proud. And the dress worked for her cuz she's Solange and she's just wierd enough to pull it off. Did you see the shoes she was stomping around in? Fierce.

Worst Dressed: The honors go to your friend and mine, Lil Mama. Would she have it any other way? I can't with her. Seriously, Lil Mama take your top hat and bat wings and fly away home already.

Best Dressed: Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl! She was divine in this colorblocked grecian gown. She looks her age but so sophisticated at the same time. The colors coral and purple are definitely on trend and the hair and makeup are the perfect accent. Good for you, girl!

Until next time, honeybunches, stay fab!

Red Carpet Roundup: 2008 BET Awards

In keeping with my usual afterwork activities, I left work Tuesday night and decided to parlay around the city, browsing Bloomie's and taking in the sights at Central Park with a friend only to realize I had to run home to catch the biggest night of the year in black entertainment: the BET Awards '08!
asdf
I couldn't help but look forward to it: from Chris Brown's excellent dancing to Usher's post daddy-dom performance (that was exactly the same as his previous post daddy-dom performances) to Rihanna's boring song that made me wish she would go back to her "Pon Di Replay" days just to get a little excitement (at least sing "Umbrella" or something). And how much did you love the shots of Chris Brown throughout her spot...singing EVERY word!
asdf
But of course, my main purpose in watching was to look at the fashion! I had strict instructions from Elle to provide a full report, and not wanting to reenact any scenes from The Devil Wears Prada, I parked myself in front of the television to take in the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Worst Dressed Male was without a doubt T-PAIN! Sometimes I wonder if there's a toxic mixture in these pimp cups they carry around.
I thought JD was dressed WAY too casually for an awards show. I see teenage boys on the street everyday dressed better than this! And I don't know where Janet was but I'm wondering if she approved of this ensemble.
Pretty Ricky must have thought they were going to the Oscars... or that they were Oscars... a HOT MESS! No other comments!
Soulja Boy: there's just way too much going on here in this outfit! The scarf gotta go and the yin yang iron-on patch gotta go and the pants he purchased from The Children's Place that he's trying to pull off as shorts...those have to go too!
Worst Dressed Female of the night goes to the lovely Ms. Peppermint Patty, ahem, I mean Strawberry Shortcake, I mean, Lil Mama! I appreciate her courageous style but this is straight up comical. I'm trying to imagine her looking at this dress and going...THIS IS IT! I truly don't see it.

Keri Hilson took a cue from Pretty Ricky as she seemed to be interested in dressing like the MTV Man On the Moon award! The black jacket doesn't help... it just makes her look like a fan of Michael Jackson right about the time his skin began to brighten! And I'm def not feeling the Wade in Water, Madame CJ Walker hairstyle she's rockin either.
Solange has not been doing too well these days. First, the silver eyebrow mishap, then the rough looking pics from her birthday celebration and now this! First off, I know she knows better than to wear that roadkill on top of her head! No words on the dress but on the upside, with a different hairstyle, outfit and shoe, that clutch MIGHT be cute!
And lastly, though TLC has been out of the loop for a while, bell bottoms were out about a decade before they even FORMED this group! And to tie it all together, T-Boz decided she was going to bring the 70's completely back with a checkered print! Why? And she's been wearing that hairstyle for so long that it has gone out of style and come back.
Now for the good news. Best Dressed Female was in my opinion Rihanna! It was a beautiful dress, totally appropriate for the season, girly enough for an evening event and edgy enough for her revamped image.
I also loved Alicia Keys...
Jordin Sparks...
Jennifer Hudson...
and Gabrielle Union!
Best Dressed Male goes to Ne-Yo! I'm feeling his "Year of the Gentleman" vibe and the spiffy look totally suits him.

The top guys include Chris Brown (though I can't say I'm totally feeling the blond mohawk)...
Jimmy Jean-Louis...
and John Legend!

The trends I'm totally following are the mini dresses like the ones worn by Lauren London, Alicia Keys and Jordin Sparks.
As well as the vibrant yellows spotted on Trina, Lauren London, Natalie Cole, Rihanna and Keyshia Cole!
I also think the leather jacket look that Chris Brown, Usher and Lil Wayne were wearing is one trend that is timeless...I'm glad they continue to rock it!

Those are only a FEW of my opinions! Tell me yours at inawordintern@gmail.com and you may see it in a follow up post featuring the readers!

SAG Awards Red Carpet

Debra Messing

Finally! A real red carpet! Fashion dreams do come true! The stars were out last night for the SAG Awards and there were plenty of fashion hits (and a few misses) for our viewing pleasure. Passing judgment brings me such joy. Let's get to it, shall we? First, I think my favorite of the night had to be Debra Messing. She looked like a total bombshell with her tousled, sexed-up hair. And the jeweled neckline of her Oscar de la Renta dress really dazzled. Solid A, Debs!

Trend #1: Shades of Silver and White
Eva's shapely silouhette really brought this backless Naeem Khan gown to life for me. I thought she looked gorgeous from head to toe, the curly bob is cute and chic.

Teri Hatcher looked suprisingly well put together. Her simple chignon really worked with her Badgley Mischka dress, which had gorgeous embellishments at the decolletage. Nice job, Teri-doll!

Ashley Tis, I really love your dress. The off-color piping is interesting and figure-friendly. But, lemon drop, you're a wreck up from the neck up. Scary.

Ugly Betty scene stealer Becki Newton wore a white sequined gown that should have worked, but fell flat. The tiered skirt looked really fug on television. Perhaps it came across better in living color?

Trend #2: Strapless

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Vanessa Williams was stunning in her bright mustard yellow Escada gown. Gush and gush.

Sandra Oh pulled off a fashion risk by wearing a couture gown by an unknown designer, inspired by a traditional Korean dress. Different, but in a good way. I even like the huge bow...it's inspired!

I am really feeling this retro glam Pamela Dennis number on Ana Ortiz. Great fit and perfect, simple adornments. Divine!

Sara Ramirez had the right idea with this dress, but the color and silouhette were a bit too prom-dressy for me. All she needed was a corsage on her wrist and a geeky date.

Ummm...yikes. Angelina can wear a doo doo stained muu muu and still look amazing and I guess that's the look she was going for here. Just tell me the pregnancy rumors are true and she gets a pass.

What is that velvet? Ellen Pompeo chose a sculpted Nina Ricci dress that she saw in Vogue. Some looks are best served on the pages of high fashion magazines.

Trend #3: A Sea of Blue

Marcia Cross chose a great Monique Lhuillier dress in a color that really works with her fiery red hair and creamy skin.

Kyra Sedgwick looks fantastic in a cobalt blue number with sweetheart neckline.

Amanda Bynes in Marchesa. Like the dress, hate the hair. The whole look is a little too mermaid-esque.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler was breath of fresh air in this colorblocked Calvin Klein ensemble. I was suprised to find out that it's actually a skirt and a body suit. I love that she looked different from just about everyone else, and her haircut is fab!

Trend #4: Short dresses

I'm not crazy about the color, but Michelle Pfieffer looks amazing. Does this woman age?

Rebecca Romjin worked the short dress trend, but it didn't come together for me. She's still a glamazon though!

Chandra, Chandra, Chandra. You really tried this time. I appreciate that you're going for a Dreamgirls feel, but I'd advise against vertical stripes on television.

Worst Dressed

Lorraine Bracco as Grape Ape. Bad color, worse fit. So entirely wrong. Her body looks like it's struggling to get out.

Oh, Nikki. Where do I begin? The hem, the sleeves, the fabric. Wrong, wrong and wrong. Fire your stylist!

What in fashion hell happened here? I'm personally offended by Jane Krakowski's look. I usually love all things Catherine Malandrino, but the puke green color and the lintball neckline are straight out of a bad dream I once had. Yuck!
