29 going on 50?

So we all know that Katie Holmes has evolved into a seriously sophisticated dresser worthy of her A-list status as wife of (the much older) Tom Cruise, mother of future socialite, Suri and BFF of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Vicki Beckham. But how much is too much? It's a fact that she is on her way to becoming American royalty, and I can totally appreciate her Jackie O-like dress and demeanor. But at the same time, I'd like her style to also embrace her youth. After all, you're only young once!

What do you think? Is Katie dressing too maturely for her age? Or is she right on the mark?

2008 Critics' Choice Awards
Red carpet flicks...and away we go!
Katie Holmes can do no wrong in my eyes. Here she is in a perfectly stylish one shouldered Lanvin goddess gown in nude sequin...ga-ga-ga-gorgeous!
Katie's Mad Money costar, the Queen, took a cue from Jennifer Hudson's NYE look and wore a striking white suit with metallic embellishments...
I don't really know (or care) who Brittany Snow is but what I do know is that the color of her tulip-shaped dress is the perfect accent to her blue eyes and blond hair...good job, gumdrop!
Kyra Sedgwick is the Stepford wife I've always wanted to be in this stunning Oscar de la Renta number...she looks radiant!
Marion Cotillard is French, therefore I love her. She looks as if she's just gotten up from a tumble in the sheets with her long wavy hair and lingerie inspired Nina Ricci dress.

Brad and Ang...boring. Gorgeous, but boring.

Katie covers InStyle
Our fave bionic biatch, Katie Holmes, is InStyle's first covergirl of 2008. I think I'd really like to trade lives with her. Minus the kid. And the marriage. As a matter of fact, I'll just take the clothes, the shopping, the photoshoots and the jet-setting. Oh and of course the money...thanks!Katie gets kinky: "Tom likes me in a suit [Color me suprised - Elle] and a mini every now and then. I like it when he likes it. It makes me blush. He'll say, 'You look good. I hope security's going with you.' Now that gives me attitude."
Katie gets mushy: "When you fall in love, it's as though time stops. It's all-encompassing. I try every day to let him know how much I love him. It gets better and better. It has made my life."

Katie Holmes is the Bionic Woman
Thursday: L.A. premiere of Lions For LambsI continue to be utterly amazed at how truly fierce Katie Holmes has become. Say what you will about her and Tommy's relationship, but Katie has overcome what was a PR nightmare and has used it to launch her starpower to another level! Fabulous, indeed. New money looks good on her! First of all, her styling is so modern but at the same time classic and sophisticated, as if she's channeling Jackie O. Miss Thing has also perfected the all-important "I'm better than you" paparazzi pout. Bellissima! And furthermore, bitch is bionic! She had time to run in Sunday's NYC marathon (26.2 miles, mind you) in between movie premieres and mommy-hood. This chick is unreal!

Screening of Lions For Lambs at MOMA. Elle would have been somewhere on painkillers, slathered in BenGay and covered with ice packs.

Trendwatch: Plaid for Fall
It's still hot and sticky outside but true fashionistas are already thinking Fall. Along with nautical, belted/cinched waists, tweeds, and feathers, plaid will make a strong showing this Fall. Beginning last Fall, tartan began appearing less on stodgy old men in Scotland and more on the most fashion foward ladies who lunch. A surefire way to wear this trend is as a skirt or dress, pairing it with dark tights and high boots. Plaid pants are a resounding no. For those of you who are visual:

UPDATE:
Katie Holmes obviously does not read the blog. For shame!

InawordFUG: The Animal Print Edition
In honor of Posh Beckham's horrendously horrible zebra print mess that garnered her my Worst Dressed award last post, I bring to you good people InawordFUG: The Animal Print Edition.
As a rule, wearing animal print can be quite risky (see below). It requires a delicate balance of taste and styling in order to avoid looking like you are auditioning for Thundercats on Ice. Fashion beginners should incorporate a frisky print as an accessory, like a belt, scarf or shoe. Daring fashionistas are encouraged to try a free-flowing animal print dress, while keeping your accessories solid. Now, it is important to note that this is one trend that works best in a more expensive piece. Nothing says tacky like cheap and shiny snakeskin (see below). Finally, and this should have been Rule #1: Never, ever ever ever ever, mix your animal prints, okay?
And now onto our show! I beg of you...do not try these at home.

Dearest Tasia,
Tight, shiny green leopard print is not your friend. Especially on a dress with slits that are trying to meet in the middle. Especially on the opening night of your Broadway debut! In the words of Kelly Clarkson: Never again.
Love you,
Elle

Mariah is the official queen of the short and tacky. Every season, I anxiously await her development into the graceful, stylish, woman of a certain age I know she can be. But it is just not happening!
Much like Tasia's dress above, this dress suffers from too much: too much decolletage, too much thigh, too much print and much too tight. Wearing your sunglasses won't help you Mimi! The fug has found you!

Where do I start? Butterflies, snakeskin boots and a mohawk, oh my! This is an absolute fright. Are those the Pedicure Uggs I've been hearing about? Burn them at once! In the immortal words of Fresh, why must I cry?

No worries, readers, all hope is not lost. Katie Cruise has gotten it right! Eye-catching dress, free-flowing fabric, solid accessories, this look is InawordFABULOUS!
Whatever you wear, wear it well!
Be deliciously fab, Elle
